Ford Turbocharged EcoBoost Engine Repair San Antonio

Ford Turbocharged EcoBoost Engine Problems & Repair

Ford Ecoboost Car, SUV, & Truck Repair at Auto Service Experts San Antonio Auto Shop

The turbocharged Ford EcoBoost 2.7L & 3.5L engines have become popular alternatives to the F150 V8 engine. Their increasing popularity is due to their ability to provide torque, power, & towing ability comparable to the V8 while offering lower fuel consumption and a lower price tag. The V6 EcoBoosts rely on direct fuel injection and a twin scroll turbocharger to produce superior performance to that of a traditional 6 cylinder engine. This technology can also be found in Ford SUVs such as the Expedition, Ecosport, Flex, Escape, Explorer, Edge, as well as the Taurus.

Some common problems which are specific to Ford 3.5L EcoBoost turbocharged engines include:

Carbon buildup on intake valves

The direct fuel injection systems which help to provide the performance advantages of EcoBoost engines can also cause carbon buildup to accumulate on the intake valves. While the fuel injection technology on newer models has been improved to reduce carbon buildup, it still causes many problems on earlier models of EcoBoost Expeditions & F150s. Ford does not recommend induction cleaning service on these vehicles, as injecting induction cleaners into the intake causes damage to turbocharger turbines, bearings, & seals.

To minimize carbon buildup, use high-octane oil & have a certified mechanic recalibrate the PCM & PCV parts according to the latest Ford releases. If excessive buildup does occur, it may be necessary to replace the affected parts because attempting to clean the system will destroy the turbochargers. It is also extremely important to keep up with the manufacturer recommended schedule for engine performance tune-ups on your Ford Ecoboost vehicle. This will help to prevent many of the common problems associated with carbon buildup.

Engine Misfires

Ignition system problems can cause the engine to misfire, especially on cold starts when the engine requires a much richer air to fuel ratio. This is often caused by the excess carbon on the intake valves and may require a cylinder head replacement to repair. An experienced mechanic can also perform an inspection to determine if coil boots and spark plug replacements will eliminate misfiring problems.

Power loss, shifting problems, & engine stalling

Several Ford transmission problems, as well as issues with the ignition system & vacuum, have been associated with out of date PCM operation software. Having the system updated and recalibrated can often eliminate these performance and transmission shifting issues.

Timing Chain Damage

Turbocharged trucks like the Ford 3.5L EcoBoost place a great deal of stress on the oil causing it to wear out faster. It is imperative to follow the manufacturer recommended oil change schedule. Worn oil does not provide adequate lubrication and can cause damage to the timing chain tensioner, & guides. The timing chain itself can stretch and wear changing the camshaft position and disrupt the correlation between the crankshaft and camshaft.
