General Motors 4L60e Transmission

One of the most popular Chevrolet transmissions is the General Motors 4L60e, which is considered by some to be the most exceptional overdrive automatic transmission available today. The 4L60e is used in most GM rear-wheel drive vehicles including the Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban, Silverado, Impala, Avalanche, S-10 Blazer, Camaro, and Corvette. It is also found in many GMC, Cadillac, and Buick models.

Chevy 4L60e Transmission Diagnostics

Most often, 4L60e transmission problems can be diagnosed using the trouble codes found on the Power Control Module readout. However, some issues will not show up here and require further diagnostic investigation. In some cases, the PCM itself is malfunctioning and must be rewired or replaced.

As with any transmission, the first place to look for a problem is with the fluid. Transmission fluid that has become contaminated, dirty, or has deteriorated to a low level can cause several problems from rough shifting to complete transmission failure! For questions about the recommended service schedule for your Chevy transmission, give us a call and speak with one of our ASE certified transmission repair specialists.

Electronically Controlled Transmissions

The “e” in 4L60e describes that it is an “electronically shift controlled transmission”, which was a rather new development in 1997 when it was first introduced. Electrical problems can cause the 4L60e to revert to a very basic mode, allowing the operator to use only the 2nd, 3rd, and reverse gears manually. This mode can allow you to safely drive your vehicle to a nearby shop where you can have it checked out, but driving in this condition should be reserved for emergency only.

Modern Chevrolet Transmission Repairs

Today nearly all transmissions are electronically controlled, making them more complex to diagnose and repair than ever. Auto Service Experts transmission mechanics have over 20 years of experience diagnosing and repairing Chevrolet transmission problems and complete all repairs or rebuilds to factory specifications. Regardless of the type of Chevy transmission problem you are experiencing, we can find the source of the issue and repair it completely the first time.
