Operation & Maintenance

Diesels are some of the most fuel-efficient vehicles on the road. They are not, however, the most EPA friendly. Proper servicing and maintenance not only reduces the amount of pollution your vehicle emits but also increases fuel economy. It is sometimes necessary to have a tune-up to increase diesel engine performance and power.

Dealerships often advertise that they have factory trained mechanics. That does not necessarily mean that they have a thorough understanding of your engine's performance and operation. Factory training tends to be a broad education that may not focus specifically on the particulars of diesel vehicles. Look for an auto repair shop with specialized diesel mechanics that have experience working with your particular make and model.

Q

Diesel Engine Maintenance & Fuel Injector Service

Diesel engines are not just for heavy-duty work trucks anymore. Many light-duty pickup trucks, passenger cars, and SUVs are also available with a diesel engine- especially European and Asian import cars. Many diesel vehicle options can be purchased from manufacturers including Volkswagen, Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Honda, Nissan, Toyota, Subaru, and Hyundai.

Due to changes in government mandates and higher environmental standards on diesel fuel refinement and emmissions, diesel cars and SUVs are more widely available in the United States. Diesels are no longer the environmental problem that they once were. They are now considered to be as clean (and quiet) as gas engines.

Many people opt for diesel engines because they are more powerful, longer lasting, more fuel efficient, and maintain a higher resale value than most gas powered engines. They can also run on biodiesel fuels which do not require fossil fuels and can be manufactured from many readily available sources such as wood chips or even vegetable oil.

Diesel maintenance differs from gas engine maintenance in a few important ways. Heavy duty engine oil filters are even more important to replace regularly and fluid change intervals tend to be shorter. There is a greater strain on emissions control devices so these must be inspected and serviced according to manufacturer reccommendations. Fuel injector service is also more vital because the system operates at higher pressures. Remember, diesel engines are designed to last hundreds of thousands of miles if properly cared for!
